Confronting Jamaica’s HIV Epidemic
Despite recent strides forward in fighting HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean, new UNAIDS data indicates that the Caribbean remains the second-most-affected region in the world behind sub-Saharan Africa, Jamaica Gleaner Online reports (jamaica-gleaner.com, 3/13).
UNAIDS director Karen Sealey told reporters at the launch of an HIV Epidemic and Response Synthesis in the Caribbean that at least 31 people in the region die each day due to AIDS-related illness, with 47 becoming newly infected daily in 2007.
“Despite the progress accomplished in recent years in the struggle against HIV, serious challenges remain,” Sealey said. She is helming a project that would unite national and regional leaders in coordinating HIV/AIDS strategies.
According to the article, roughly 230,000 people are living with HIV in the Caribbean.
