Graphic designer and illustrator Jean-Claude “J.C.” Suares has died of heart failure after two surgeries to battle a bacterial infection, Variety reports. He was 71. Suares was the founding creative director of POZ magazine and the former 7 Days magazine. He also designed or redesigned magazines including Variety, New York, Broadcasting & Cable, Connoisseur and Fast Company. His illustrations appeared in magazines including POZ, The New Yorker, The Atlantic and Publishers Weekly. He designed, wrote and illustrated more than 100 books. Most recently, Suares was working on Columbia College Today, which he designed for more than 25 years. He is survived by his wife, artist Nina Duran.
