Kenya to Spend $61 Million on HIV Treatment

On April 6, the Kenyan health ministry announced that the country will spend  $61.4 million next year on antiretroviral (ARV) therapy for Kenyans living with HIV, Agence France-Presse (AFP)/Yahoo News reports (news.yahoo.com, 4/6).

Some 190,000 HIV-positive Kenyans are on ARV treatment, according to the ministry, which adds that 5,000 new patients need treatment every month.

The money will come from the Kenyan government, foreign charities and foundations and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

As of last June, about 1 million Africans were getting antiretroviral drugs—less than a quarter of the estimated 4.6 million people who need them, the AFP reports.
