More Than 1.5 Million People Tested for HIV in Kenya
Kenya launched a major campaign in November to encourage its
citizens to get tested for HIV voluntarily, PlusNews reports. As a result, more
than 1.5 million Kenyans have been tested for the virus.
According to the article, the campaign is part of the
government’s initiative to test at least 80 percent of the population for HIV
by the end of 2010. Currently, only 40 percent of their citizens have tested
for HIV.
The campaign was mainly conducted door-to-door, but it also
reached out to at-risk communities such as commercial sex workers. Men have not
usually come forward in large numbers to get tested for HIV, but they accounted
for 40 percent of people tested in this campaign.
