C. Everett Koop, Former Surgeon General, Dies

Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, MD, died at his home in New Hampshire, USA Today reports. He was 96. A pediatric surgeon with a conservative reputation, he served as surgeon general from 1981 to 1989 during the Ronald Reagan administration and the early months of the George H. W. Bush administration. In 1986, Koop issued a 36-page report on AIDS with plain discussion about HIV transmission. In 1988, an eight-page version of the report was mailed to every U.S. household. The report advocated condom use for people who are sexually active and sex education for school children. Koop issued another report in 1986 on the dangers of second-hand smoke, which set the stage for current widespread prohibitions against smoking in public places.
