HIV Rates and Causes Among Latinos Vary by Region

Regional differences in HIV rates and causes among Latinos suggest that testing, prevention and treatment efforts for the virus should be adapted for those regions, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and reported by HealthDay News. Researchers analyzed 2010 data from 46 states and Puerto Rico. Among Latinos, the HIV rate in the Northeast was more than twice of any other U.S. region. However, the largest percentage of HIV cases among Latinos was in the South. Sexual contact with a member of the same sex was the primary method of HIV transmission for Latinos overall. However, Latinos with HIV in the Northeast and in Puerto Rico were more likely to have contracted the virus through injection drug use or sexual contact with a member of the opposite sex.
