Hillary Clinton Urged to Include LGBT People in Global AIDS Policy

The International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) asked Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for more comprehensive U.S.-backed sexual and reproductive health policies that cater to the global lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community, The Advocate reports.

“In recent years, U.S. policy has by and large neglected the needs of LGBT people worldwide,” said Cary Alan Johnson, executive director of IGLHRC, in a letter to Clinton.

The group requests the appointment of a global AIDS coordinator who pays attention to LGBT concerns, especially the ongoing antigay discrimination that limits access to HIV/AIDS education and services. In 2007, less than $1 million out of $15 billion set aside for HIV services was spent on HIV prevention and treatment programs for men who have sex with men (MSM) in Africa, according to IGLHRC data.
