LGBT Conference Revives Community Focus on HIV/AIDS
While political issues such as marriage equality and discrimination protection have been on the minds of most LGBT activists as of late, last weekend’s Creating Change Conference called for the community to refocus on AIDS, reports The Denver Post.
“People will have a hard time choosing marriage if they are sick and dying,” said Sue Hyde, director of the conference. “AIDS and HIV have never lost their grip.”
Hosted by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the 21st annual conference—held January 28 to February 1 in Denver—was a grassroots meeting of more than 2,000 activists to discuss how from the ground up they can influence HIV/AIDS policy in Washington, DC. One of its main goals was to begin lobbying the Obama administration on how to devise a national AIDS strategy that would be grounded in science. “Twenty-seven years into this epidemic, the United States does not have a coordinated plan,” said event panelist Marjorie Hill, chief executive officer of New York City’s Gay Men’s Health Crisis.
Other topics discussed at the conference were stigma, comprehensive sex education, condom availability, AIDS apathy and the importance of addressing the needs of minorities.
