Global Fund Malaria Drugs Worth Millions of Dollars Stolen

An internal investigation by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has determined millions of dollars of its donated malaria drugs have been stolen in recent years, The Associated Press (AP) reports. Officials identified 13 countries, mostly in Africa, where the donated drugs are being sold on the black market. About 70 percent of the drug theft cases occurred at government operated warehouses by security personnel, warehouse managers and doctors. Since discovering the theft, the Global Fund suspended grants for storing medicines at government warehouses in Swaziland and Malawi. More than 250 million people contract malaria each year, killing about 1 million people, mostly children in Africa.
