Maldives Has Its First Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV
Officials in Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, believe they have identified the first child in their country born with HIV, Minivan News reports. The 2-year-old child tested positive for the virus earlier this year. Advocates are citing this case as a sign that HIV prevention efforts in the country need to increase. Between 1991 and 2011, a total of 183 HIV cases were reported in Maldives, with 15 among Maldivians and 168 among expatriate workers.
