Leaders at the XVIII International AIDS Conference in Vienna are promoting male circumcision as a “proven, cost-effective method” for HIV prevention in Africa, according to a Population Services International (PSI) statement. Ambassador Eric Goosby, the U.S. global AIDS coordinator, and David Okello, director of the World Health Organization’s Regional Office for Africa Cluster on AIDS, TB and Malaria, lent their support to PSI in calling for rapid and efficient scale-up of male circumcision in Eastern and Southern Africa. Bill Clinton and Bill Gates made similar comments during the conference.
