Maryland’s Youth Get HIV Grant
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has won a $1.38 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to fund HIV prevention education and health services for youth, local paper the Cumberland Times-News reports (times-news.com, 4/3).
The MSDE will use the grant to examine current HIV prevention programs and develop a plan for improving and expanding them. The funds will also go toward the Maryland Youth Risk Survey, which is an annual survey of 9th through 12th graders to collect data on youth risk behaviors.
“I am extraordinarily pleased that MSDE has received this grant to allow the continuation of critical initiatives addressing chronic diseases, such as HIV,” said State Superintendent of Schools Nancy Grasmick. “It is imperative for the health of Maryland’s youth that preventive programs are in place to prevent the further spread of HIV, STD, and to prevent teen pregnancy.”
