November 2008

POS/NEG

POS
In August, presidential hopefuls John McCain and Barack Obama squared off in a debate at Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, where Pastor Rick Warren and his wife Kay preach AIDS awareness, advocacy and acceptance through the church’s HIV/AIDS Initiative.

NEG
In the debates, both candidates touched on hot topics from stem cell research to same-sex marriage. However, Warren, who moderated the debate, never grilled the candidates about HIV/AIDS, despite promising in a pre-event press release to raise questions about the disease.

POS
Beijing’s federal health bureau distributed hundreds of thousands of free condoms and information pamphlets to participating hotels during the 2008 Olympic Games to promote safer sex among spectators and athletes alike.

NEG
While the Olympic torch flamed on, the Chinese government detained AIDS activists (several of whom were en route to the Olympics) as part of the country’s crackdown on social and political dissent. The intent? To “save face” as the eyes of the world were on China. A word to the wise: Handing out condoms and info? Good. Locking up people who advocate for condoms, info and health care? Bad. We’re keeping our eyes on you, China…
