Pittsburgh Researchers Awarded $11.8M to Study Microbicide Film

University of Pittsburgh researchers received a five year $11.8 million federal grant to develop a quickly dissolving vaginal film containing tenofovir, an antiretroviral drug, for HIV prevention, HealthNewsDigest.com reports. Previous studies found that a tenofovir vaginal gel cut HIV infection risk among women by half and 39 percent in women who used it less vigilantly. The “film” formulation is similar to that used for breath mint strips and could be easier to use. Researchers plan to test the film locally within a year.
