Although the Middle East and North Africa represent just 1 percent of the global HIV pandemic, the fatality rate for people with AIDS in this region has increased as AIDS-related deaths worldwide have stabilized or decreased, the Global Post reports. Data from the UNAIDS 2012 Global Report also show that the region is the only one that has yet to see a reduction in babies born with the virus. In addition, it has the lowest percentage of pregnant women with HIV receiving antiretroviral treatment to prevent transmission of the virus to their babies.
