The number of new HIV diagnoses in Minnesota increased from 326 in 2008 to 368 in 2009—the state’s highest number in 17 years—according to state health officials and reported by The Associated Press.

Peter Carr, manager of the health department’s HIV/AIDS section, said the 13 percent rise in new infections can be primarily attributed to males ages 15 to 24. He added that there is a general sense of complacency about HIV in the state, particularly among young men who have sex with men.

According to the article, Minnesota’s health department has recorded 9,176 HIV/AIDS cases since it began tracking AIDS in 1982 and HIV in 1985.
