Miss Universe Contestants Compete in Condom Olympics
In anticipation of the Miss Universe 2009 pageant on Sunday, August 23, contestants took part in the Condom Olympics earlier today. Participants tossed water-filled condoms and blew into condoms until they burst—contests that illustrated the strength of the prophylactics.
The Condom Olympics are part of a peer education workshop designed by Population Services International (PSI), a global health organization and partner of the Miss Universe Organization.
Following the pageant, the winner will be granted an opportunity to become an ambassador of PSI’s HIV prevention and education program, YouthAIDS. Dayana Mendoza, Miss Universe 2008, used her platform to speak to women, who are still disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS.
“Millions of young girls and women across the world look up to Miss Universe and admire the Miss Universe contestants,” said Ava Rampersad from PSI/Caribbean Regional. “Now, thanks to today’s event, these women will be able to continue being leaders in their communities and around the world, educating young women on HIV prevention and helping them live longer, healthier lives.”
The Condom Olympics also included “Wild Fire Infection” games to illustrate the spread of HIV between sexual partners.
