A Deadly Learning Curve for Mozambique
A generation of Mozambique’s children has been left without schoolteachers, as 1,000 of the nation’s educators—nearly 100 from each of its 11 provinces—die from AIDS-related illness each year (Reuters Africa, 10/12).
The government has launched HIV awareness programs in schools and hospitals and has stepped up literacy campaigns. HIV/AIDS has reduced Mozambique’s average life expectancy to 35; 16 percent of its 19 million citizens are living with the virus.
The government also plans to recruit 9,000 additional teachers and initiate additional education training programs.
