Nelson Mandela, Former South African President, Dies
Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first black president, has died, The New York Times reports. He was 95. Mandela had not been seen in public since 2010 when the country hosted the soccer World Cup. He was released from jail in 1990 after serving 27 years as a political prisoner under apartheid. He led the African National Congress, his political party, to electoral victory in 1994. He served one five-year term, stepping aside at the age of 75 to support charitable causes for children, as well as HIV/AIDS. His son Makgatho died of AIDS-related complications in 2005.
