New Orleans Jail to Provide STI Testing, Treatment to Inmates

A new program at the Orleans Parish jail in New Orleans will provide inmates with testing and treatment for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports. The program will also guide inmates to clinics so they can access health care after their release.

According to the article, not everyone arrested and booked at the facility’s Intake and Processing Center will be tested; however, anyone who stays at the jail for a few days will be tested for STIs and be given counseling as well as any necessary treatment. The testing initiative is a partnership with the city and health offices, which will provide the jail with laboratory support.

The comprehensive testing initiative is an expansion of an HIV testing program for female inmates that launched last year. According to the jail’s medical director, Samuel Gore, MD, many of the female inmates embraced the program.

“Mostly they hear about it from someone else, and they offer to get tested themselves,” Gore said. “They are volunteering.”
