HIV-Positive New Zealanders Report High Rates of Condom Use
A new survey conducted by La Trobe University in Melbourne found that New Zealanders living with HIV use condoms frequently to avoid infecting their negative partners, the New Zealand Herald reports (nzherald.co.nz, 4/12).
Researchers surveyed 261 HIV-positive New Zealanders, more than half of whom reported having casual sex in the past six months. Of the 59 participants who did not know the HIV status of their most recent partner, 52 said they used condoms. All nine of the participants who believed their partner to be HIV negative reported condom use.
According to the Herald, the survey also found that participants reported increased use of antiretroviral medications and higher rates of employment, and they reported better overall health and well-being, compared with participants surveyed in 2001.
