Three U.S. scientists will receive the 2013 Avant-Garde Award for HIV/AIDS Research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), according to a NIDA statement. Each will get $500,000 per year for five years to support research for the prevention or treatment of HIV/AIDS in drug users. The awardees are Warner Greene, MD, PhD, of the Gladstone Institutes; Richard Sutton, MD, PhD, of Yale University; and Timothy Cardozo, MD, PhD, of New York University. By inhibiting an enzyme, Greene seeks to provide a cost-effective bridge to treatment by delaying progression to AIDS. Sutton seeks to understand how some people with HIV control the virus without meds. Cardozo seeks to develop a vaccine that treats cocaine addiction and prevents HIV.
