Nigerian Police Recruits Expelled After Testing HIV Positive
After testing positive for HIV, 26 police recruits were expelled from Nigeria’s Kaduna Police College, local newspaper This Day/AllAfrica.com reports (allafrica.com, 2/1).
According to the article, the school’s actions are under fire from local AIDS activists who believe the expulsion of the recruits—19 women and seven men—are discriminatory.
“We condemn the action and insist that the Force retrace its steps and call back these people who have gone through all the tests and are awaiting their Police Force Numbers,” says Immanuel Bonet, the Kaduna state coordinator of Civil Society on HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (CISHAN).
However, Police College Commandant Bello Ado denies that the recruits were expelled because of their HIV status.
“Nobody told them they had HIV/AIDS,” Ado told This Day. “I only told them that they had some medical predicament.”
