The Shirt Off My Back

by James Wortman

The printing and graphic design firm Nightsweats & T-cells (nightsweats.com) believes that there is one HIV treatment option that always works: employment. Staffed entirely by people living with HIV, the Cleveland company is entering its second decade of creating AIDS awareness T-shirts and doing design work for hundreds of ASOs across the country, donating more than $100,000 in free art time along the way. The group also has commercial clients like MTV's Staying Alive Foundation.

Nightsweats & T-cells director of development and marketing Gil Kudrin, who is 49 and has been HIV positive since the late 1980s, says that forcing people to pay attention to the epidemic is still his grandest and most demanding design. “It’s been an amazing challenge,” says Kudrin. “But every step of the way it’s stretched our imagination and our talent.”
