Oct. 15 Is National Latino AIDS Awareness Day
National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD) is Friday, October 15, the last day of Hispanic Heritage Month. The theme of NLAAD 2010 is “Save a Life, It May Be Your Own. Get Tested for HIV.” Established in 2003 by the Latino Commission on AIDS and the Hispanic Federation with other groups nationwide, NLAAD promotes much-needed HIV/AIDS awareness in the Latino community. According to a new study published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), the annual rate of HIV diagnosis in 2008 for Latinos in the United States was about three times that for whites.
