Officials Call for Routine Testing of North Carolina Inmates
Ministers and public health officials in North Carolina are calling for routine HIV testing of all of the state’s inmates and treatment for those who test positive, WAVY-TV/the Associated Press (AP) reports (wavy.com, 4/14).
According to the AP, Dr. Peter Leone of North Carolina’s Division of Public Health said that prison officials have not fully utilized their opportunity to conduct HIV/AIDS interventions.
About 700 inmates in North Carolina are known to be HIV positive—roughly 1.8 percent of the state’s 39,000 prisoners.
The AP reports that the state currently requires inmates to be tested for syphilis.
