NYC Hospitals to Offer Thousands of Rapid HIV Tests
At the prompting of New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, medical diagnostics company OraSure Technologies has agreed to donate tens of thousands of rapid HIV tests to city hospitals, the New York Daily News reports (nydailynews.com, 3/30).
The Health and Hospitals Corporation, the organization that runs New York City’s hospitals, has set a goal of testing 150,000 people for HIV this year, and 160,000 people next year. The free rapid tests from Orasure are intended to help the corporation reach its increased testing goals.
“We have to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS,” said Quinn on March 29 at Harlem Hospital in Manhattan. “If you don’t know if you have it, you can’t get yourself care.”
Orasure’s rapid tests produce results in 20 minutes. That people who are tested get their results so quickly helps address the issue of people not returning to pick up their results.
