Risky Sex Among Older African-American Men

Older African-American men living with HIV often have sex without condoms, according to research published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing. (Blackwell Publishing Ltd., 10/15)

Researchers studied 130 middle-aged and older men in the United States and determined that as many as four out of 10 HIV-positive African Americans could be putting their partners at risk for the virus by not using condoms during sex.

“These findings are of particular concern as HIV and AIDS rates among black (non-Hispanic men) in the USA and in people over 50 have risen considerably in recent years. In fact, AIDS prevalence statistics for minority men in the U.S. are staggering,” said Dr. Christopher Lance Coleman of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in Philadelphia.
