Woman Infected Through Transplant Sues Chicago Hospital

An unnamed 33-year-old woman who tested positive for HIV and hepatitis C after receiving an infected kidney during an organ transplant is suing the University of Chicago Medical Center and a surgeon on the transplant team, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The woman’s body rejected the kidney, and she is now on dialysis in addition to an antiretroviral regimen.

According to the article, the plaintiff was one of four patients who received HIV-infected organs from a single male donor at Chicago area hospitals in January 2007. All four were diagnosed with both blood-borne infections following the transplant procedure. One of the organ recipients has since died.

Two blood tests on the donor—who gave both kidneys, his liver and heart—revealed no trace of antibodies for HIV or hepatitis C. The Chicago area transplants were the first time HIV has been transmitted via organ donation since 1994.
