Panel Tells Global Fund to Adopt Better Financial Safeguards
An independent panel investigating the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has concluded that the fund needs to reform grant management internally and adopt better financial safeguards, The Associated Press (AP) reports. The panel of experts was convened in March to conduct a six-month review after tens of millions of dollars were lost as a result of mismanagement and alleged fraud, which led to donor countries withholding promised funds. The panel was critical of the fund’s on-the-ground partners in governments and health departments, but it also credited the fund with saving millions of lives.
