U.S. Philanthropic Donations to HIV/AIDS Fall 7% in 2010
Private U.S.-based philanthropic groups donated 7 percent less in 2010 than 2009 to HIV/AIDS causes, according to a report by Funders Concerned About AIDS (FCAA), a group that tracks charitable donations and grants linked to HIV/AIDS. Titled U.S. Philanthropic Support to Address HIV/AIDS in 2010, the report pegged the total funding for HIV/AIDS from philanthropic institutions, public charities and corporate grant-making programs at $459 million in 2010—a figure $33 million short of the total in 2009. Contributions to combat the domestic HIV epidemic decreased by nearly 10 percent to $101 million. The report determined that the decline in new commitments and actual disbursements was a result of funding reductions among the top 10 U.S. HIV/AIDS donors—a group responsible for 80 percent of disbursements. In addition, a number of longtime donors of $300,000 or more did not give to HIV/AIDS-specific causes in 2010.
