Philippine Advocates Push for Reproductive Health Bill

Lawmakers in the Philippines are being urged to pass a national policy on reproductive health that will require schools to teach reproductive health education and government hospitals to supply contraceptives, the Philippine Daily Inquirer reports.

According to the country’s health department, 57 more people were reported to be HIV positive in September, bringing this year’s total of HIV-positive cases so far to 395.

“This alarming statistic supports the call for the immediate passage of the reproductive health bill now being deliberated in the House of the Representatives,” said Marlon Lacsamana, chairman of the Girls Women and HIV & AIDS Network (GWHAN), in a statement.

The hope is that the Reproductive Health, Responsible Parenthood and Population Development Act of 2008 (House Bill 5043) will help fight widespread misinformation and give women access to quality family planning that’s legal and medically safe.
