Prevention Goes Wireless

A program sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the University of Georgia’s New Media Institute and Verizon Wireless encourages college students in Atlanta to design HIV/AIDS mobile-phone public service announcements to promote youth testing, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (ajc.com, 4/26).

Five teams of students filmed short videos, which are being reviewed by officials from the CDC, Verizon and local AIDS-service organizations. The initiative plans to have videos ready for release to the public by National HIV Testing Day, June 27.

“We are especially concerned about HIV and younger people,” said Dr. Kevin Fenton, director of CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS. “We have to make sure our messages are innovative, relevant and culturally competent.”
