Australia Lends Papua New Guinea a Hand—and Millions of Dollars—to Fight AIDS

On March 7, Australian officials pledged to provide funds to help address the AIDS epidemic in Papua New Guinea, Reuters reports (reuters.com, 3/7). Australia is Papua New Guinea’s chief donor, providing $332 million a year.

During a business breakfast in the nation’s capital, Port Moresby, Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said Australia would provide an additional $12 million to local non-government agencies and service organizations focusing on AIDS education, treatment and prevention.

According to Reuters, Papua New Guinea has the South Pacific region’s highest rate of HIV/AIDS infections, with 64,000 people living with the virus.

”The overall challenge of HIV/AIDS is a significant one for us all,” Rudd said. “Of course we have a feeling of compassion towards our combined humanity to act effectively with people who are suffering this terrible disease.”
