Around the world, less than 5% of men who have sex with men (MSM) have access to HIV prevention and care, according to the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR). That’s why the foundation has announced an initiative to tackle HIV rates among MSM in countries with limited resources. “We know the epidemic is skyrocketing in developing countries,” Kevin Frost, amfAR’s interim CEO, told POZ at its annual “Honoring With Pride” AIDS benefit this June. The amfAR MSM Initiative will provide grants to groups in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe to provide HIV/AIDS services helping the men battle stigma, discrimination and what Frost calls “willful ignorance on the part of others—including governments.”
