Prostate Cancer and HIV: Treatable

As positive people age, cancers affecting older negative folks strike them as well. Prostate cancer is one example, but there’s a silver lining: For positive men who are on HIV meds, treatment for this cancer seems to work as well as it does for any other man.
In one recent study, Liron Pantanowitz, MD, of Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, reviewed records of HIV-positive men with prostate cancer and concluded that radiation, surgery and hormonal therapy succeeded for them as well as it did for HIV-negative men. Another study, led by Anthony Berson, MD, of St. Vincent’s Comprehensive Cancer Center in Manhattan, found that radiation and brachytherapy (a form of radiation in which radioactive “seeds” are implanted in the tumor) were safe and effective in positive men.
