On-Site Rapid HIV Tests Effective at Drug Treatment Centers
On-site rapid HIV testing at drug treatment centers is effective, according to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH). Between January and May 2009, researchers divided 1,281 HIV-negative (or status unknown) people into one of three groups: those who were referred for off-site HIV testing, those who received risk reduction counseling with on-site rapid HIV testing, and those who received verbal information only about testing (not risk reduction) along with on-site rapid HIV testing. The study found the combined on-site rapid testing participants received more HIV test results than off-site testing referral participants. The study found no additional benefit from HIV sexual risk-reduction counseling.
