UNAIDS: “Treatment 2.0” Could Prevent 10 Million Deaths

“Treatment 2.0” is a new approach to HIV/AIDS treatment, simplifying the way it’s provided and increasing access to HIV meds. The approach was outlined in a report by the United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), which estimated that Treatment 2.0 could prevent 10 million deaths by 2025 and reduce new HIV cases by up to 1 million each year. But UNAIDS says that progress must be made in five areas: developing better pills and diagnostics; implementing the “treatment as prevention” approach; lowering costs; improving voluntary HIV testing; creating better counseling and linkages to care; and strengthening community mobilization.
