U.N. Robin Hood Tax Protest Marks 2 Years of Occupy Wall Street

On the two-year anniversary of the Occupy Wall Street movement, Tuesday, September 17, thousands of people protested in New York City on the opening day of the United Nations General Assembly to call on President Obama and world leaders to back an international “Robin Hood Tax.” Protesters called for a small tax on high frequency financial transactions to generate billions of dollars to fund social programs, including universal access to HIV treatment, care and prevention. Following a rally at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, activists from VOCAL-NY, ACT UP New York and other groups blocked rush-hour traffic in a nonviolent civil disobedience. Police arrested several AIDS advocates, including the heads of HIV organizations. Members from more than 200 local groups then marched through Midtown Manhattan. Revenue from the tax also would address health care, higher education, public transit and climate change.
