HIV-Positive Russian Prisoner Moved to Clinic
An HIV-positive former oil executive in Russia, who is currently on trial for fraud and tax-evasion charges, has been transferred from prison to a specialist clinic after a public campaign to get him proper HIV treatment.
According to Reuters (reuters.com, 2/8), Vasily Alexanian, 36, has accused prosecutors of denying him adequate treatment in order to make him to give evidence against a former coworker. The prosecutors deny these charges and say instead that Alexanian refused medical treatment in prison in order to delay his trial.
Before being transferred, Alexanian said he would die unless he received lifesaving treatment available outside of prison. The European Court of Human Rights and rights group Amnesty International had also voiced concerns about his medical treatment.
