Court: Russia Violated Rights of Jailed Positive Oil Exec
The European Court of Human Rights believes that Russian authorities failed to give proper medical treatment to Vasily Alexanian, a jailed former oil executive who is HIV positive, Reuters reports.
A Russian court has ruled to free Alexanian, who is also going blind and has cancer, upon the payment of a $1.8 million bail. The former vice-president of Yukos oil is currently under guard in a Moscow hospital waiting for the bail to be raised.
“Having regard to its findings of violations…and especially in view of the gravity of the applicant’s illnesses, the court considered that the applicant’s continuous detention was unacceptable,” said the Strasbourg-based human rights court.
Alexanian faces charges of fraud and tax evasion. Prosecutors claim he’s trying to delay the trial by refusing medical treatment while imprisoned.
