Ryan Lewis and Mother Launch the 30/30 Project

Ryan Lewis, one half of the Grammy Award-winning hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, is the first donor to the 30/30 Project. His mother Julie Lewis launched the project to bring health care to areas around the world that need it most.

She contracted HIV in 1984 from a blood transfusion resulting from the complicated pregnancy of Teresa, her first daughter. When Julie was diagnosed years later, she had already given birth to Laura, her second daughter, and Ryan.

In recognition of the luck that none of her children were born with HIV and that she has lived with HIV for 30 years, Julie and her family wanted to give back. The project seeks to build health centers that will offer services for at least 30 years.

In addition to providing HIV/AIDS care and treatment, the centers also will address tuberculosis and malaria, as well as general health care. The first center is planned for the African nation of Malawi, where 1 in 10 people are HIV positive.

Depending on the success of its Indiegogo fundraising campaign, the project hopes to build 30 health centers worldwide providing comprehensive health care to about 600,000 people. The first five centers are planned for Malawi, Kenya and Uganda.

Assisting with the project are Construction for Change, which will build the centers, and Partners in Health, which will operate the facilities. In the official video for the project, Julie and Ryan explain the details and Macklemore provides his support.
