Prom season’s here, and high schoolers are piling into overpriced limos, outrageous dresses and boozy after-parties. One topic that rarely makes the gymnasium floor: safe sex. “High schoolers spend hours talking about who they are taking to the prom,” says Jill Michelson of Marie Stopes International Australia, a reproductive health org. “Unfortunately, an open chat about safe sex isn’t on the agenda.” Her group is leading a global charge to make condoms an integral part of prom night. Michelson recently led a text message campaign, TXT 4 Free Condomz, calling them the “must-have school formal accessory.” Some say the campaign encourages teen sex. Says Michelson: “Ignoring the problem won’t make it go away.”
