New HIV cases in San Francisco increased from 406 diagnoses in 2011 to 413 reported cases in 2012, according to The Bay Area Reporter. The slight increase ends a steady six-year decline in new HIV cases in the city. Although the data has caused concern among local health officials, new data on 2013 to be released later this year will provide a clearer picture of where the trend is actually headed. Officials caution that it remains to be seen whether the uptick in reported new HIV cases is actually caused by more transmissions or simply a result of increased testing efforts by the city.
