Federal Stimulus Funds Bolster AIDS Programs in South Carolina
Federal stimulus money in South Carolina’s proposed $5.6 billion budget plan will continue programs that provide medication to HIV-positive people and aim to prevent new infections, The Associated Press reports.
According to the article, the budget approved on February 20 includes $1 million for an HIV prevention program that funds 39 church-based education initiatives as well as $2.4 million for the state’s AIDS Drug Assistance Program, which provides treatment for HIV-positive people who do not have health insurance but do not qualify for Medicaid.
We’ve got to have $2.4 million just to keep a lid on the epidemic,” said Bambi Gaddist, executive director of the South Carolina HIV/AIDS Council. “You want [HIV-positive people] to be well, working and contributing to the economy, not sick and dependent on Medicaid.”
