Schwarzenegger Signs HIV Screening Bill
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed a bill that will make HIV screening a routine part of medical examinations (cbs2.com, 10/15).
“This new law can't come soon enough,” said Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia, who coauthored the bill. “Working in a bipartisan effort, we were able to pass legislation that will save the lives of many Californians by providing people with the information and treatment they need.”
The law will go into effect January 1. It is expected to reduce the stigma surrounding HIV testing as well as reduce the spread of the virus.
As many as 40,000 people in California are living with HIV and don’t know it, according to the California State Office of AIDS.
