Suit Seeks End to Segregation of HIV-Positive Alabama Inmates

The American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama has filed a lawsuit against the Alabama Department of Corrections on behalf of HIV-positive inmates in state prisons, CBS 8 News reports. Alabama is one of two states in the country—South Carolina is the other—that segregate HIV-positive inmates from prisoners who are HIV negative. The Alabama Department of Corrections doesn’t intend to change its policy and has asked for the suit to be dismissed on the grounds that all inmates have access to the same programs and that no rights are violated. HIV-positive inmates argue that the segregation contributes to HIV stigma and discrimination within state prisons.
