Concerns on HIV Social Services Funds Going to Treatment
Some HIV/AIDS service providers are concerned that recent breakthroughs in HIV/AIDS treatment will have a negative impact on social services, New America Media reports. While there is general excitement regarding breakthroughs in medication and prevention strategies, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and the idea that expanding treatment to more people with HIV is a means of prevention, some HIV experts have expressed concerns that traditional services will be cut as more money is dedicated to treatment. AIDS service organizations across the United States have already experienced budget cuts or have had to merge or close down, which has decreased the social services that engage and support patients to make sure they are adhering to treatment.
