Sex Ed Bills Advance in Pennsylvania and Louisiana

A Pennsylvania sex education bill getting traction mandates that school boards in each district have the power to determine material for the curriculum but it must instruct students about HIV/AIDS and HIV prevention, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. The House Education Committee recently sent the bill to the House of Representatives for approval.

Similarly in Louisiana, the State legislature has advanced a bill to amend a law that currently allows school districts discretion in participation of sex education, The Daily Advertiser reports. The bill would make sex education classes obligatory for grades 4 through 12 with the curriculum based on contraception use and sexually transmitted infections with an emphasis on abstinence.

According to the articles, opponents of the laws in both states fear that sex education increases sexual activity. In response, the bills in both states allow parents to withdraw their children from the classes. Only 18 states currently require sex education to be taught throughout public schools.
