HIV Leads Dayton, Ohio, to Consider Rehab Home for Sex Workers
In response to the rising rate of HIV infections among sex workers in Dayton, Ohio, local police are looking to establish the city’s first rehabilitation home for sex workers, the Dayton Daily News reports.
“It’s a problem that has to be addressed because prostitution affects the entire community,” police chief Richard Biehl said. “There is a quality of life issue here, along with the general welfare of citizens in areas where prostitution is a problem.”
According to the article, 12 sex workers, including two men, were arrested in 2008 and found to be HIV positive. The city is considering applying for federal stimulus loans to start the home and is discussing with safe houses in other cities ways to raise additional funds.
